When Should Teeth be Removed?

A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone. At Township Road Family Dental Centre, our dentists perform extractions only when a less invasive option would be ineffective, or if keeping the tooth will compromise your oral health.

Common reasons for pulling a tooth include excessive tooth damage and problematic wisdom teeth. Teeth are also sometimes pulled to prepare for other dental procedures.

Tooth Extractions

Tooth extraction is a dental procedure where a tooth is removed from its socket in the jawbone. This may be necessary in case of severe tooth decay, gum disease, injury, or crowding in the mouth.

Most extractions can be performed in a general dentist’s office under local anesthesia, but sometimes extractions require referral to an oral surgeon due to medical reasons, difficulty of the extraction, or if sedation is required. After the tooth is removed, the dentist may suggest replacement options such as dental implants, bridges, or dentures, to restore the appearance and function of the teeth.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom tooth removal, also known as third molar extraction, is a common dental procedure performed to remove one or more wisdom teeth that have failed to emerge fully or are causing pain, or other oral health problems.

The extraction of wisdom teeth can usually be performed in a general dentist’s office under local anesthesia, depending on the number of teeth being removed, the position of the teeth, and the patient’s level of anxiety. Sometimes referral to an oral surgeon is required. After the procedure, patients may experience some swelling, pain, and discomfort, but these symptoms typically resolve within a few days to a week.
